How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 using an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are several connector pins, and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors are not firing at all. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine with no sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is plugged in but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars audi lost key when the actual pressure is 0.

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or at a parts store.
